Artist's Comments

Taken on a day hillwalking with my step-brother in the Campsie Hills, looking east from the summit of Meikle Bin. I quite liked the textures of the rock and the shadow that it cast, so i decided to make it the feature of this shot.

It just marks the highest point on the hill, most peaks around these have parts have them. I've always wondered how they manage to get all of them to the summits cause they're all around 4 feet tall and made from solid concrete!

Hi folks; it's a 'trig point' (shortened from trigonometry)! They were put up on the highest points around and used as survey point for map makers before satellites were invented. If you look on the top they have a triangular fitting for the equipment that was used by the surveyers. There used to be and indentity plate of some kind on the side but this one is missing. (Oh horrors - now I sound like some kind of geek!) :disbelief:

I used to go around different places and collect photos of these things, hey it gave us a good reason to clamber about some pretty spectacular looking places. Ace photo by the way.
